The legend was crafted out of tragedy and over time, it was shaped and molded into something uniquely American. WebGrew up in the Great Lakes area myself. The Beast of Bray Road (werewolf). Rock Lake's Rocky (the lake with the underwater pyramids), the Baraboo Devil's Lake monster. I lived in Minnesota for a while too, and heard a lot of stories about werewolves there as well.
